Why Would You Do That?

Sunday was one of the unexpected days @ Threads. As we came together for our Worship Gatherings, there were some laughs, shock and surprise when the person teaching didn't show up! Some people became quite panicked, others got ticked, while many sat back and simply wondered "its Threads...so what's next?"
When someone tracked me down, I sent them back to our Gathering with the message that our kids deserve the best people caring, teaching and shepherding them. Why would we do that?
It's interesting when you see the way Jesus led among His followers. There were many times Christ blew them away with the unexpected. Why would He do that?
He didn't do the unexpected to create a buzz. It wasn't about hype. Over and over he would break with what was natural, so He could wake them to what was supernatural. The mission Jesus gave us is to help unchurched people become radical "love God, love others" Christ followers. That's our bottom line. It's why Threads exists. It isn't natural to our personal agendas. In fact, His mission is very disruptive to personal agendas.
Why would we "interrupt" our Worship Gatherings? It's because our mission is neither safe nor comfortable. But Jesus mission demands that we will do whatever it takes to live that mission out.
That's why this Sunday, the lead pastor rock and played with infants @ our 9:15pm Worship Gathering. It's why I camped out @ the 11 am Worship Gathering with toddlers. It's why I came back with our ages K-5 ministry team (called The Backyard) that night.
I am amazed at the many volunteers that we have at Threads. I sat in awe at the feet of an incredibly competent and caring team in our Treehouse nursery area. The way they loved on kids while keeping a very safe environment was amazing. If you have not thanked a Kids Community volunteer, please do!
In the past three weeks of surveying Kids Community, here's what I is becoming clear.
-
We haven't been partnering with parents in the spiritual growth of their kids.
-
Within Threads, ministry to children isn't seen as critical to the mission Christ gave us.
-
We are probably 10 dedicated people away from an amazing time of spiritual life change among kids and their families at Threads.
In my next blogs, I will be writing about those three realities. As we ask brutal questions, our Kids Community teams are committed to changing these realities.
I am encouraged to see that our teams have great vision for something more for our kids. They want our kids to see how great God is and discover the everyday ways they can follow this Jesus. Our volunteers are ready to go. The rest of this summer and the coming fall will be an exciting time.
Our vision is to see Kids Community on Sundays become the highlight of our kids' weeks.

Well, even if we're used to the unexpected at Threads, last Sunday's experience certainly led many of us to soul searching thought, dialogue and prayer. Personally I'm asking God where he wants and needs me most. Does he want me creatively serving in Kid's Community rather than serving with creativity? I don't know the answer to that yet, but I think reading your next few blogs will help guide that decision, and hopefully, prayerfully, help God guide others as well.
